PRX Announces Catapult Podcast Development Initiative for Stations

Corporation for Public Broadcasting provides $1M grant for Project Catapult

Sep 21, 2016

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (September 21, 2016) PRX, an award-winning media company, announced “Project Catapult” an innovative podcast development project with public media stations, made possible by a $1 million grant from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB).

Five stations will be selected to participate in a 20-week curriculum to develop new skills, which will include digital content development, cultivating diverse talent, audience engagement and monetization. PRX will provide technical training in key areas where broadcast and podcast strategies diverge. The training will take place at the PRX’s Podcast Garage in Boston and on-location at each station. At the end of the curriculum, each station, in co-production with PRX, will launch a new podcast.

“We are taking the lessons learned from the success of Radiotopia and the design-thinking approach of Matter and applying them to stations ready to take a significant leap into mobile listening,” said PRX CEO Kerri Hoffman. “PRX connects the dots of experience, locale and focus so we can effectively share what we know to help stations mature into the next stage of podcasting.”

The grant will allocate funds to stations to cover travel, training and production costs.

“Innovation is at the core of CPB’s support of public media stations across the countrythis grant provides avenues for more stations to increase their multimedia offerings,” said Pat Harrison, president and CEO of CPB. “While public radio is an acknowledged leader in podcasting, not all stations have had the resources and expertise to participate. This program aims to build capacity that ensures more diversity and inclusiveness in multimedia platforms.”

Through an open RFP process, PRX and CPB, with input from an expert panel, will select the five stations. Project Catapult will focus on sustainable ideas, identification and cultivation of talent, feedback and skills training as well as industry linkages and technology best practices.

The Project Catapult application process opens today. Participating station teams will begin work in January 2017.
