ABOUT ONE SMALL STEP
At this moment, our country feels increasingly disconnected and tribal — our mutual distrust amplified by everything from social media to the efforts of forces seeking to weaken the foundations of our democracy. Many Americans feel unheard, alone, and angry.
Founded in 2003, StoryCorps has perfected a simple method for helping people feel more connected and less alone; for increasing hope and decreasing fear of the other; for reminding us all of the inherent worth of every person and every story. Up to this point, almost all of the people who have come to participate in StoryCorps have done so because they know and love one another.
With the One Small Step initiative, StoryCorps is fostering conversations between people who hold different worldviews. Participants don’t come to argue about politics, but simply to get to know one another as human beings, to take one small step towards each other and remember there is more that unites than divides us.
The Field Manager for One Small Step (OSS) will organize and implement activities that support the development of community partnerships in the two designated OSS Cities. The Field Manager will work within the two designated “OSS Cities” to identify, develop, and support 3-5 community partnerships (e.g. colleges, faith organizations, civic organizations, libraries, etc.). Partners will be trained to implement OSS strategies with their constituencies, collecting interviews and sharing stories.
The Field Manager position is a temporary, 12-month position. The role will travel to each OSS City at least 1-2x during the duration of the role. This position operates with considerable autonomy and reports to the Director, One Small Step.
WHAT YOU’LL DO
- Identify and build partnerships in OSS Cities
- Assume primary responsibility for supporting partners to implement OSS with their constituents
- Determine planning and activities that will enable partners to recruit and enroll participants in a local drive to record interviews, including providing training, content, and promotional support that helps local partners engage a diverse segment of their constituencies
- Support partners in their efforts to record and preserve OSS interviews (approximately 25 per partner) in their local communities
- Assist partners in creating edited audio segments, including disseminating production tools and training materials tailored to partners’ capacity, and needs
- Prepare reports (narrative, qualitative, and quantitative) for StoryCorps funders and internal organizational use
- Travel to each OSS City 1-2 times each.
- Perform other duties to support the One Small Step Initiative and OSS partnerships, as assigned
- You have a Bachelor’s degree or a similar combination of relevant education + experience.
- You have at least 3 years’ experience managing collaborative programs, preferably in a nonprofit environment.
- You have demonstrated experience in developing and executing outreach plans.
- You are experienced in planning and overseeing complex project execution
- You are comfortable and have the ability to move seamlessly between varied political, social, and organizational environments in local communities -- e.g., from nonprofits and foundations to companies, government officials, etc.
- You’re a creative & analytical thinker with a drive for results and a demonstrated track record of creating and implementing new initiatives
- You communicate effectively – by email, phone or in person
- You’re organized, have keen attention to detail, and you’re able to multitask effectively.
- You have strong computer skills and proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word & Excel).
- You have the ability to work independently as well as collaboratively; you are a great team player.
- You are flexible and adaptable to a growing, changing organization.
- You demonstrate cultural humility and thrive in a diverse working environment.
- You are comfortable delivering presentations and trainings to audiences of varying sizes.
PREFERRED SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS
- You are fluent in a language other than English; Spanish highly preferred.
