POSITION: Confluence Producer (90.5 WESA)

STATUS: Full-time, exempt

Position Overview

Produce WESA’s daily news show, The Confluence with Kevin Gavin, along with the show’s host and editor/producer. The Confluence is an hour-long program that explores local news, issues and events along with the region’s arts and culture. It addition to providing listeners with access to political, business, and community leaders, The Confluence gives voice to people in our region who are leading interesting and impactful lives. This full-time exempt position reports to the WESA Station Manager and works with the show team and the WESA newsroom to create the mix of interviews, panel discussions, and produced news segments that make up The Confluence and also engineers the live broadcast of program.


Essential Functions

  • Be a vital team member involved with the generation of story ideas to the research to the scripting to the broadcast of each day's program;
  • Board engineer and produce the live program using NewsBoss content management software and WideOrbit traffic system;
  • Pitch, research, and script show segments;
  • Produce and prepare hosts and guests for recorded or live interviews;
  • Edit pre-recorded audio for length, clarity, and content;
  • Engineer pre-recorded segments when needed;
  • Format daily show clock with editor;
  • Edit audio and write summary of show to post to website;
  • Create promotional content for show;
  • Engage show audience on social media;
  • Conduct interviews and produce for broadcast;
  • Coordinate content with the newsroom;
  • Participate in the sound design of the program;
  • Attend station events and assist in educational outreach activities;
  • Participate in on-air and online fundraising as needed;


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Proficiency with digital audio editing, studio technology and practices, and digital content;
  • Sound and ethical news judgment, with a commitment to objectivity, balance and fairness;
  • Strong writing skills;
  • Ability to handle multiple projects in a fast-paced, deadline-oriented environment;
  • Creativity and sound judgment in social media usage;
  • An understanding of the NPR audience and news style;
  • Good interpersonal skills;
  • Ability to work well under pressure and meet deadlines;



  • A genuine interest in, and appreciation for, the importance of news topics;
  • A natural curiosity for news and research;
  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism-related field or equivalent experience / training;
  • Two to four years of experience as a radio or news producer;
  • Honesty and integrity in all dealings;
  • Enthusiasm for the missions of PCBC and its stations.


Physical Requirements

  • Able to work in an office environment and use standard office equipment such as computers and printers;
  • Field work occasionally required;

91.3 WYEP was founded in 1974 as an all-volunteer community licensed radio station.  It broadcasts a diverse offering of adult alternative music, provides community education programs, and presents a large number of highly visible events and concerts in the region.  Its mission is to “enrich the community through musical discovery, expression and education.”

In addition to radio programming, our stations play an active role in engaging the community through online and mobile services and in-person events and have a prominent voice in Pittsburgh’s civic and cultural affairs. Each week more than 200,000 southwestern Pennsylvanians listen to our broadcasts, and tens of thousands more engage with our content through our websites and mobile digital services.
