Mississippi Public Broadcasting (MPB) conducted the American Graduate Youth Media Summer Institute in July 2015. While building confidence and leadership skills, the students also created videos giving voice to their concerns. Thirty-five students participated and produced 4 videos.
MPB also visited 3 high schools with low graduation rates to boost enthusiasm for graduating. Miss Mississippi 2014 Jasmine Murray was the spokesperson and addressed the students with word and song.
In December 2015, MPB will hold its 5th annual dropout prevention summit. Stop the Drop: An American Graduate Summit will be held December 15 and features Dr. Steve Perry as the keynote speaker. Dr. Steve Perry has become a national icon in the education revolution, a change agent who is tireless in his fight for providing equal and competitive opportunities for children who otherwise would not have a voice. His mission is simple, high-quality education with college bound opportunities for children in poverty. It is his belief that in order to best educate a child you must treat them and their family as your family. He exemplifies this practice throughout his work in schools and with school communities. Approximately 300 educators, students and community leaders are expected to attend the summit from all over the state.
