January Station Highlights: KET, KLRU, MPT
Across the country, public media stations are rallying partners and organizations in their community to raise awareness and aid in helping youth stay on the path to graduation.
Here are some of the highlights of what's been happening around the country recently.
- KET hosted an OVEE screening, “Never Give Up,” on December 15 for struggling high school students. The screening included five video segments from “Dropping Back In” that featured inspirational journeys of people who struggled in school but persevered and also examined the pervasive problem in many large American high schools where struggling students are either overtly or subtly encouraged to drop out of school. The Kentucky Department of Education helped publicize the screening to its networks and 52 people participated in the event, including a group of students from an alternative school in Idaho.
- KLRU hosted “Stop the Drop: Engaging Students in Their Futures, ” an interactive discussion about why students drop out of school. KLRU used real-time polling and youth-produced videos to spur discussion with at-risk youth, advocates, and educators about reasons students drop out and how to keep them on the path to high school graduation.
- MPT produced an interstitial to highlight the importance of a strong early learning foundation and its ultimate impact on a student’s success in school. The spot, which was taped at the Jewish Community Center of Greater Baltimore, appears on-air and online, and is used frequently in presentations - particularly with funders.
