High school diploma can provide a boost to the economy

With 610,000 more high school graduates in 2013, the nation could have seen more than 65,000 new jobs for the economy, according to new data released from the Alliance for Excellent Education.

The organization released data for national data along with information for more than 200 metro and regional markets Tuesday morning.

Among highlights of the data released, include, if there was a 90 percent graduation rate in 2013, then:

  • There would be an increase of $7.2 billion in annual earnings
  • An increase of $16.8 billion in home sales
  • An increase of $11.5 billion in annual gross domestic product
